Roommate Safety Guide
Finding the right roommate should be exciting, comfortable, and safe. Follow these practical steps to protect your personal safety, finances, and privacy when searching for or offering a room.
1. Meet in a Public Place First
Before scheduling a private home visit, arrange an initial coffee or video chat. Meet at a busy, neutral public location, tell a friend or family member about your plans, and consider having someone accompany you on your initial visit.
2. Never Pay Before Viewing
Never pay a deposit, wire money or use gift cards or crypto before viewing in person. Genuine hosts will always show the space and provide a written lease agreement before collecting deposits.
3. Report & Block Suspicious Users
If a user asks to communicate off-platform immediately, requests unusual payment methods, claims to be overseas unable to show the property, or pressures you for upfront cash, disengage immediately.
Use the Report option on any listing or user profile to flag it for administrative review, or report directly via email to support@roomavio.com with the listing URL.
Additional Safety Best Practices
Get Written House Agreements
Document the terms of your living arrangement in writing: monthly rent, utilities split, quiet hours, overnight guest policies, and chore responsibilities. Clear written agreements prevent future misunderstandings.
Keep Contact Details Private
Use Roomavio's in-app messaging system during initial discussions. Protect your personal phone number, home address, and financial details until you have established mutual comfort and confirmed a tour.
Location Privacy by Default
Exact street addresses are never shown publicly. Only approximate neighborhood areas appear on public listing maps.
Verify Master Lease Terms
If subletting or joining an existing lease, confirm that the primary landlord allows subtenants or roommate additions. Request to see the lease rules regarding guest stays and subletting permissions.
Fair Housing & Mutual Respect
Roomavio supports equal housing opportunity. Listings may not discriminate based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status or disability.
